Bell Gaining Steam

Before jumping from the Memphis Stars to Memphis YOMCA, Bartlett High guard Anthlon Bell wasn't really on any high-major college coach's radar. Now, with the additional exposure that YOMCA demands, Bell has several big-time offers and stands to earn more before the summer's over.

"I think (my newfound exposure is due to) switching teams because last summer, my AAU team didn't get much exposure," said Anthlon Bell, who's got offers from Arkansas and Auburn, among others. "It's also me getting better. It's also ( YOMCA coach) Jevonte (Holmes) working me out so I can show coaches I can compete at the highest level."

Last week at the Peach Jam, Holmes said he received calls from Umass and Texas A&M. YOMCA lost in the finals to BABC, 84-67.

"It was a good experience, especially playing in front of college coaches and playing well," Bell said. "I was showing them that I can play with the top competition in the country."

Bell said he hasn't received serious interest from the University of Memphis but would definitely consider the Tigers if they did extend an offer. Bell attended a "Power Hour" workout at the U of M earlier this summer.

"(The Memphis coaches) are cool and down-to-earth," Bell said. "They're cool coaches."

YOMCA heads off to Orlando, Fla., for the Super Showcase on July 19th. Bell said he hopes to escape the pigeonhole of only being a spot-up shooter.

"I want to show coaches I can create my own shot and get to the rack," the 6-foot-3 guard said.

Bell said he doesn't have a top five yet but hopes to have one before school starts in August.

"I had planned on committing early but since I had a good Peach Jam and hopefully I have a good tournament in Orlando, I'm thinking about waiting. But hopefully I'll sign in November."
