Sheldon Dawson to Memphis

Sheldon Dawson to Memphis

Memphis head coach Larry Porter snagged another top in-state recruit from within the city limits on Monday afternoon. Andrew Bone takes a look at what the Tigers are getting in Sheldon Dawson.

Memphis landed a surprise commitment when Will Gross, four-star quarterback from Memphis-Melrose, Tenn., gave his verbal pledge to the Tigers. Sheldon Dawson, three-star cornerback from Memphis-Ridgeway announced for the in-state program on Monday afternoon.

Dawson had trimmed his list to four schools which included Memphis, Tennessee, Arkansas and Georgia. He held several others offers including Ole Miss, Cincinnati, North Carolina and Vanderbilt.

The 5-foot-10, 185-pound prospect is one of the best athletes in the state. He broke up 16 passes during his junior season on the defensive side of the ball. He shares time in the backfield with Jalen Walton, but still rushed for more than 1,100 yards and 14 touchdowns in 2010.

Dawson is an athlete who could play on either side of the ball. He is projected as a cornerback on the college level. He has breakaway speed and can cover a lot of ground. He has great vision, excellent hips and does a good job coming up against the run.

Dawson is a great overall athlete. He flies around on the field and does a great job in man-to-man coverage. Dawson needs to continue to build his strength and add weight. He will continue to touch up on his overall skills as a defensive back.

Memphis scored a big commitment in Dawson, and it adds to their recruiting momentum in the state of Tennessee.
