McManis: "I'm still a Tiger"

McManis

A day after his Conquistadors knocked off South Panola, Olive Branch LB and Memphis commit Wynton McManis reaffirmed his commitment to the University of Memphis, no matter what the future may hold for U of M coach Larry Porter.

If today's game against Middle Tennessee is indeed University of Memphis coach Larry Porter's last as head coach of the Tigers, Olive Branch (Miss.) linebacker and Memphis commit Wynton McManis isn't bracing for a shift in his recruitment.

"I've been thinking about it but not really," said McManis, Porter's second commitment of the 2012 class. "I think Coach Porter's been doing a good job. I'm still a Tiger, I'm committed. If it's his last day, there's nothing I can control. I'm still a Tiger."

Rumors of Porter being on the chopping block have swirled violently throughout the city, as the Tigers are off to a 1-3 start this season and have been outscored 148-17 in their three losses.

McManis said that, even if Porter were to be let go, he'd honor his commitment to the U of M.

"I'm a Tiger," McManis said. "I'm committed to Memphis."

Unlike the Tigers, McManis and Olive Branch are enjoying tremendous success this season. The Conquistadors knocked off in-state rival South Panola, 24-6, for the first time since 2000 — when McManis was in the first grade.

"It felt unbelievable, but we knew we could do it," McManis said. "We came in and knew that we had our gameplan set, we just played hard. We took over the game first and it went on from there."

Since he committed to the Tigers in July, McManis said he's been hearing from Mississippi State and UAB though he has not scheduled any official visits.

He said he's been working specifically on his speed during his senior season for the Conquistadors.

"I've been working on reacting quicker to the plays and getting there to make plays and letting them come to me," McManis said.
