The Golden Eagles have had a frustrating season, from the coaches, to the players to the fans. Golden Eagle head coach Ellis Johnson sat down for his weekly press conference to discuss the loss the SMU, the quarterback situation for the upcoming week, and the state of the team for the rest of the year and into next year.

Coach Johnson said the lack of a running game was the main factor in the Golden Eagle loss to SMU, but that there are reasons besides the backs that the running game struggled.

"We're getting crowded at the line of scrimmage from a gameplan standpoint," Coach Johnson said. "It all wraps around to our lack of effectiveness at the throwing the ball consistently. SMU just played more physical than us at the line of scrimmage."

The Southern Miss head coach said the quarterback situation is up in the air this week due to injury. "We're really not sure who is healthy," Coach Johnson said. "We'll just have to see who is healthy before we can make a call on that."

Coach Johnson said Anthony Alford suffered some form of leg injury during the game, and that his status will be determined during the week. Arsenio Favor will return to the team this week after a one week suspension.

The Southern Miss head coach said there will need to be more evaluation on Chris Campbell, but that he is afraid the quarterback is done for the season.

Coach Johnson said a big reason the team has struggled this team is the turnover ratio.

"As a head coach, it's my job to figure out why we aren't good at ball security and why we can't create turnovers on defense," Coach Johnson said. "We have got to figure out how to get better on the turnover ratio for the next two weeks, and into the future."

Coach Johnson spoke a bit about the coaching staff, and what the status of the staff is currently and for the future. "I'm not going to evaluate that until after the season," he said.

"There may be attrition by choice; there may be other things we have to evaluate. When a coach has lost four players off and on to injury, I have a hard time evaluating him. I don't know if Garrett Chachere can coach tight-ends or not, he hasn't had any. Our problems right now are not coaching, but I don't know if the answers are coaching. I'm going to have to evaluate that."
